Don’t be anxious about anything

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Days of great anxiety

There is no doubt that we are living in days of great anxiety. Nuclear proliferation which seems to be tottering on the brink of disaster, the environmental problems, the financial crisis, political crisis — and now world-wide swine flu epidemic — all these ‘modern day problems’ have the potential to gender anxiety, fear and an unsettled mind in many people.

It is sad that many Christians — even true believers — are caught up in this anxious spirit of the age. Grumbling and worry seem to be natural to most folk — probably all of us are susceptible at times — especially if we dwell on the news media declarations and the casual conversation of folk around us.

What is the antidote? It is simple: We need to focus on the truth of the Word of God and place it upmost in our thoughts and imaginations. We need to constantly pray and give thanks with the Word of God in our hearts and minds.

As the scripture says (when we do this) even in the most trying circumstances: “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, WILL guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
